“Mistakes Were Made” is an expression that is commonly used as a rhetorical device, whereby a speaker acknowledges that a situation was handled poorly or inappropriately but seeks to evade any direct admission or accusation of responsibility by not specifying the person who made the mistake. The phrase is basically a non-apology apology. “Mistakes were made,” is often used throughout US political history. The term was first used by US President Ulysses S. Grant in a report to Congress in 1876. Grant wrote “mistakes have been made, as all can see and I admit it.” the phrase has also been uttered by US Presidents Nixon, Reagan, Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama. The phrase has even been uttered by famous non-presidents in US History like Henry Kissinger, John McCain, Chris Christie, and Jeb Bush.

The mission of this blog is to discuss mistakes made throughout history, pop culture, sports, religion, and business by people, corporations, or ideas that were doomed to fail. This blog doesn’t mean to disparage these people’s legacies, but rather show that we are all human and that we all make mistakes. This blog is also meant to educate a current generation and future generations of blunders of the past, so they won’t hopefully be repeated in the future.
